A dense, very focused chardonnay with cooked pineapple and peaches. It’s full-bodied with tightness and tension, but there’s a solid center palate at the same time. A sweet-and-sour tinge to the finish. Toffee, too. Really fascinating to taste. Drink or hold. ... More details

The 2018 Chardonnay Comandante Hyde Vineyard is sourced from vines that are nearly forty years of age. Old vines give the Comandante a very distinct sense of transparency that is striking. The orange confit, hazelnut, spice and tropical fruit flavors are intense, and yet the wine maintains a feeling on lightness that is quite remarkable. This is one of the most distinctive expressions of Hyde readers will come across.
Winery
Rich aromas of allspice and cinnamon pair with toasted almond as this wine develops in the glass. Lighter notes of chamomile and lemon verbena meld into layers of Golden Delicious apple and citrus blossom. The refined palate texture plays on a knife’s edge of balancing acidity and body, which results in layers of flavors and extended length long after the first sip.

Varietal: Chardonnay

Despite having its origins in western France, Chardonnay's immense popularity and flexibility quickly meant that before long, there wasn't a wine producing country in the world which wasn't investing in this fascinating and versatile grape varietal. Today, Chardonnays manage to win fine wine competitions and satisfy supermarket shoppers simultaneously, due to the fact that this grape varietal can take on many characteristics and features of where it is grown and how it is handled. Indeed, this green skinned grape is renowned for not having so much unique flavor within the fruit, but is very sensitive to the features of the terroir it is grown in, as well as to aging As such, it isn't unusual to find bottles of single variety Chardonnay wine described as holding notes of white stone, mountain waters, or other such geological features alongside the more predictable fruit descriptions This makes Chardonnay grape varietal wines an exciting world to delve into – full of surprises, full of delights.

Region: California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Country: United States

Whilst there are several strains of native grape varietals in the United States, it was the introduction of the European species which prompted the country to begin producing wines on a large scale. Over the past few centuries, experimentation and cross-breeding has produced great successes in regards to the quality and suitability of the fruit grown in states such as California, Oregon, Washington and New York, and the past few decades have seen New World wines from the United States reach much higher standards. Arguably the finest United States wines have always come out of California, where the climate and terrroir is most suitable for fine wine production. The masterful blending of classic grape varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, amongst others including Syrah and Chardonnay, have had world beating results in recent years, prompting many to suggest that there has never been a better time for buying and drinking United States wines.
