When it comes to French red blended wines of finesse and real class, there are few regions quite so renowned as the Rhone Valley’s Chateauneuf du Pape. This hallowed set of appellations has long been associated with deep and complex wines, made according to traditional techniques by family wineries in operation for generations. One such winery is Chateau de Beaucastel, a family operation which is now in its third generation of vintners, and which is generally regarded as being responsible for producing the best value for money Chateauneuf du Pape wines available in the world.

The Perrin family have been overseeing wine production at Chateau de Beaucastel since the beginning of the twentieth century, and currently have three labels which showcase the fantastic range of terroirs and possibilities offered by this unique corner of France. The Rhone Valley is famed throughout the world for the brilliance of its wines, and Chateau de Beaucastel is a sincere attempt to educate people just what these terroirs can produce, at affordable prices accessible to all.

The winemaking operation at Chateau de Beaucastel is intriguing and important for two reasons. Firstly, this is an organic domaine - and was one of the first in the region to become certified organic. Minimal intervention and avoidance of any chemical intrusion in the wines is the Perrin family’s philosophy, believing that this is the single most effective way to gain full expression of their phenomenal terroir. Secondly, Chateau de Beaucastel is one of the few wineries which uses the ‘a chaud’ vinification method. This involves heating the incoming grapes quite rapidly, in order to kill off harmful bacteria, and extract the color and aroma they seek for their characterful wines. The wines themselves are matured in oak casks, and are bottled with only light fining and no filtration. The result is the true, unadulterated personality of Chateauneuf du Pape’s finest vineyards, at a fraction of the price.
