Medium ruby red. Beautiful aromas of strawberry, flowers and leather follow through to a full body, with supersilky tannins and a long, caressing finish. Gorgeous plum, blackberry and floral character.

This full-bodied wine boasts a rich luxurious nose of very ripe sweet fruits, licorice, anise and mint and a dense, brooding palate of evolved dark fruits, finishing with good length and plenty of tannins. 90 points/drink after 2007, 12/04

Varietal: Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo grapes have been grown for centuries in the hilly region of northern Italy, and have more recently started to appear in many New World countries, too, where modern vintners have expressed great enthusiasm for their fine characteristics. Their fame and popularity is widely known, and the Nebbiolo varietal is recognized as the grape responsible for producing the legendary fine wines of Italy. Indeed, this grape is packed full of intense and interesting flavors, ranging from truffle and prune, to tobacco and violets, making the wines they produce a sensory delight which simply get better the longer they are aged. The grapes also lend a beautifully pale red color to their wines, which helped secure their place as some of the finest and most elegant to be found anywhere on earth.

Region: Piedmont

The beautiful region of Piedmont in the north west of Italy is responsible for producing many of Europe's finest red wines. Famous appellations such as Barolo and Barbaresco are the envy of wine-makers all over the world, and attract plenty of tourism as a result of their traditional techniques and the stunning setting they lie in. The region has a similar summer climate to nearby French regions such as Bordeaux, but the rest of their year is considerably colder, and far drier as a result of the rain shadow cast by the Alps. The wineries which cover much of Piedmont have, over many generations, mastered how to make the most of the Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera grapes which thrive here, and nowadays are beginning to experimenting with many imported varietals to increase the region's range and meet international demand.

It isn't difficult to understand why Italy is famed not just for the quality of its wines, but also for the vast variety and range of characteristics found in the wines there. The hilly, misty sub-region of Barolo is home to many of Italy's finest traditional wineries, and it enjoys a reputation for excellence and quality unmatched by any other place in the country. The secret to Barolo's success is down to the mineral rich soils and cool, foggy climatic conditions which allow the Nebbiolo grape to grow so well, and express so much flavor and complexity. As such, the red wines of Barolo have become a benchmark for high quality, traditionally made and bottled Italian wines, and are dearly loved all around the world.
