The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

Supple and seamless on the palate, offering vivid honeydew and pit fruit flavors accented by a vibrant lemon zest quality. The NV Brut Blanc De Blancs Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger is also terrific. Made from 100% Chardonnay, it has a more chiseled, tight, backward style in its sautéed apple and ripe citrus aromas and flavors. It too has terrific minerality, as well as medium body, a fine, elegant mousse, and a great finish.

Delamotte’s latest NV Brut Blanc de Blancs is based on the 2019 vintage and complemented by reserve wines from 2018 and 2017. Disgorged in late 2024 with a dosage of seven grams per liter, it emerges from the glass with aromas of lemon confit, candied orange peel and shortbread cookie, mingled with Granny Smith apple. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied and concentrated, fleshy and textural, with a rich core of fruit underpinned by ripe yet racy acids and framed by chalky extract. It will strongly benefit from three to five years of post-disgorgement aging. It is sourced from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Oger.

Since it is based on the Côte des Blancs, it is appropriate that one of this producer's most important cuvées is a Blanc de Blancs. This is a stylish Champagne that brings out crisp acidity, fine apple and citrus flavors and a poised final acidity. The bottling is ready to drink.

Malolactic is used but no oak, in pursuit of a wine that embodies the concentration of Chardonnay style. This is open and approachable, with quite opulent aromas of ripe peach fruit, lemon citrus, white flowers, brioche and a hint of marzipan. Mellow but structured, with purity, complexity and freshness – this would be a perfect match for oysters or other seafood.
