The 2015 Pinot Noir Old Vines was aged for 12 months in 75% used oak (mostly French, with 14% Hungarian). It comes in at 13% alcohol. Sourced from the winery's Keuka Lake old vines, planted in 1958, this is from a warmer year, Frank said. This is the Finger Lakes, however, so that doesn't mean you get a big, ripe blockbuster. The wine is still elegant. It still retains good acidity and freshness. If anything, it is nicely understated, with sophisticated mid-palate finesse. This is beautifully textured, too, with sensual velvet coating the palate. It is also well structured, with plenty of grip on the finish in its youth. In the background, somewhat subdued just now, are black raspberry nuances. The fruit is not fully evolved and awake but that will come in short order, I suspect. This graceful and seductive Pinot Noir is mostly about its potential at the moment. It could really use a year or two in the cellar. These do tend to age well but drinking it over the next decade or so is probably a good idea if you are aiming at the sweet spot.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes have been cultivated in and around the Burgundy region of France for centuries, where they have long been favored by vintners for their wide range of flavors, their thin skins and for producing wines which have light, smooth tannins, and a beautiful garnet red color Whilst they remain one of the flagship varietals of this special region, their wide popularity and recent status as a fashionable 'romantic' varietal has led to them being planted in almost every wine producing country in the world. However, the Pinot Noir demands a huge amount of care and attention from the wineries that wish to grow it, as this varietal is particularly susceptible to various forms of mildew and rot. Despite this, the grape is otherwise a favorite with wineries for the fact that it requires little extra effort once it begins fermentation. Pinot Noir is also widely known for producing some of the world's most famous sparkling wines, being one of two key grapes for the production of Champagne, and several other sparkling varieties.

New York state has a relatively long history of wine-making and vineyard cultivation, with vineyards in the region dating back to the Dutch settlements of the 17th century.
