Doyard’s 2019 vintage-based NV Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Non Dosé Révolution, disgorged in May 2025, unfurls from the glass with aromas of nashi pear, peach, orange oil and freshly baked bread mingled with honeysuckle. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, fleshy yet incisive, built around a rich core of fruit supported by ripe but vibrant acidity and culminating in a bone-dry, saline finish, where delicate aromatic bitters assert themselves. Readers will recall that the cuvée derives principally from Avize, complemented by fruit from Oger, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Cramant, and is vinified in equal parts in stainless steel and oak.

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

A vivid, open-knit Champagne, offering a lively bead, with flavors of macerated apricot, white raspberry, grapefruit pith and dried thyme, plus a touch of blanched almond. Hints of oyster shell and brine show on the finish. Disgorged January 2025. Drink now. 50 cases imported.

A distinctly restrained if airy and fresh nose exhibits notes of primarily citrus and green apple with soft yeast nuances lurking in the background. The highly energetic middle weight flavors are clean, bright and markedly crisp as the supporting mousse is firm while the overtly dry finish offers reasonable persistence. What it doesn't offer though is the same complexity as the other wines reviewed here. In sum, this is certainly very refreshing and pretty but it's not deep.
