Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Graves is home to renowned châteaux like Haut-Brion, a Premier Cru Classé, exemplifying the region's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Decanter

Liquorice and cool blue fruit aromas on the nose. Fresh and fruity, a lovely crystalline texture in terms of fruit purity but with a soft chalky grain that gives a feeling of fullness in the mouth. Crushed velvet tannins, plum and red cherry fruit with a touch of cola, aniseed and salty minerality on the finish. Really well formed, already quite appealing and accessible. Succulent and juicy but with lots of complexity too. Great stuff.

The 2022 Château Bouscaut is brilliant stuff, with a more modern yet balanced, impressive style. Cassis, smoky oak, scorched earth, and graphite notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, concentrated, has ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a killer Grave that will benefit from 4-5 years in the cellar and have two decades of overall longevity. The 2022 is 55% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Malbec.

Wine Advocate

The second year of organic conversion marks a new start in Bordeaux's classic estate. Evoking aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and oak, the 2022 Bouscaut is medium to full-bodied, round and dense on the palate with chewy tannins and a slightly dry finish attributed to an oaky, toasty aftertaste and characteristic Cabernet grip. Overall, it represents a commendable effort.

The Wine Independent

The 2022 red from Bouscaut is a blend led by 55% Merlot, with 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and unusually for the appellation, 10% of the assemblage is Malbec. Aromatically this opens with a nose of sweet blackcurrant, cranberry, acacia flowers and toast, with a little white pepper lift. It feels softly polished at the start of the palate, a supple and rather relaxed texture laid over a backbone of powdery phenolics, with some delicate bitterness, and a nice acid drive which with the rich and powdery tannins keeps it moving along in the midpalate. It finishes ripe, coherent, fresh, with plenty of grippy structure evident here, with just a subtle sappy edge. A charming Bouscaut with some development potential. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

Wine Spectator

Ripe and focused, with a steady beam of cassis and bitter plum sauce notes that stretch out nicely, laced with rose hip, iris and anise accents through the focused finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. Best from 2026 through 2036. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 5,800 cases made, 200 cases imported.
