Blended of 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Croix Cardinale aged on the fine lees for 13 months in 100% new French oak barrels from seven coopers. It has a deep garnet-purple color and is scented of baked plum, blackberry pie and chocolate box with wafts of licorice and black tea. The palate is medium to full-bodied, vibrant and elegant with lovely ripe, rounded tannins and lovely freshness on the finish. About 1,333 cases produced

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2016 Croix Cardinale has attractive wild strawberry, raspberry coulis and light floral tones on the nose, which feels pure and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin and a fine bead of acidity, and cohesive in the mouth, displaying well-integrated oak on the finish. Afford it five years in bottle and it should turn into an upstanding Saint-Émilion.

The 2016 Château Croix Cardinale comes from a 4-hectare vineyard of clay and limestone soils that was purchased by Dominique and Florence Decoster, owners of Fleur Cardinale, in 2012. The 2016 is another great value in a vintage where there are loads of them. Made from 72% Merlot and 28% Cabernet Franc brought up in new French oak, it has a medium-bodied, elegant, light-on-its-feet style as well as classic red and blue fruits, some dried herbs and spice aromas, and a silky texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. Drink it any time over the coming decade or more.
