Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. 88-90 This 37-hectare estate in the southern Médoc (not far from the likes of La Lagune and Cantemerle) has delivered a fine effort in the form of the 2021 Sénéjac. Offering up aromas of cassis, spices, pipe tobacco and loamy soil, it's medium-bodied, ample and fleshy, with the supple tannins and charming, open personality that's typical of wines from this sector. Château Talbot's Jean-Michel Laporte is the winemaker.

The 2021 Sénéjac has a light red berry and briar nose, retaining that element of blood orange that imparts a little complexity. It does need more vigor. The palate is better, with fine tannins and fresh acidity, quite vibrant with red cherries and redcurrant jus. Nicely structured on the finish, it has just the right amount of bitterness. This is a commendable Haut-Médoc for the vintage.

Vanilla and tobacco leaves reveal abundant blackberry and blackcurrant leaves, accompanied by savoury dark spices. Fresh red plum brightens a palate of black fruits and Assam tea. The cassis sweetness is refreshed by firm acidity and supported by ripe tannic grip. A muscular Bordeaux blend, aged in oak for 12–15 months (30% new).
