Disgorged in July 2025 with two grams per liter of dosage, the 2020 Vertus Clos de l’Abbaye has turned out beautifully, expanding aromatically to reveal notes of peach, brioche, nashi pear and lemon oil, mingled with linden blossom. On the palate, it is full-bodied, vinous and textural, built around a concentrated core and underpinned by bright acidity and chalky, structuring dry extract that imparts a counterbalancing sensation of freshness in warm vintages such as this, concluding with a persistent saline finish. As usual, this cuvée derives from a 0.36-hectare walled vineyard that was planted in 1956 just behind the winery in Vertus and is vinified entirely in barrel. It is old-fashioned Champagne in the noblest sense of the term.

The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.
