Walnuts, blackberries and roasted spices with a touch of cedar and dark chocolate. Almost full-bodied, this has a flavorful center palate and a dense, lengthy finish. Dusty tannins aplenty. Plush, voluptuous and judiciously made. Drink from 2027.

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Based on 90% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Virginie De Valandraud is a smoking good wine, offering layers of blackberries, currants, tobacco, and chocolate. Full-bodied and rich, it has a deep, velvety texture, terrific overall balance, and serious depth. Vinified and aged 20 months in new barrels, it will evolve nicely for 15+ years with ease.

91-93 A blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a pH of 3.7, the deep garnet-purple colored 2022 Virginie de Valandraud shoots from the glass with bold notions of black cherry compote, wild blueberries, and plum preserves, followed by hints of Chinese five spice and dusty soil. Full-bodied, the palate is bright and expressive, with a plush texture and a long, spicy finish.

The 2022 Virginie de Valandraud has a decidedly Left Bank-like nose, which makes me wonder about the Cabernet component here. Strong pencil shaving scents marginally obscure the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Good backbone, gentle grip, again, quite Left Bank in style towards the finish. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting in London.

Caressing and forward in feel, this offers up a warm ganache note draped over a core of plum and black cherry preserve flavors, with a subtle tug of earth at the tail end. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2032. 6,000 cases made.
