At once fresh and mellow this is a prototypical St.-Emilion with plenty of depth and ripe blackberry fruit. Very satisfying now or in 2019 and 2020. (Suckling)

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2015 Virginie de Valandraud is matured in 100% new oak, according to Jean-Luc Thunevin. It has an intense, quite powerful bouquet with red cherries intermingling with blueberry and candied orange peel. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a "juicy" Virginie with plenty of puppy fat, but the oak feels nicely integrated and does not obscure its personality on the silky, sensual finish. Perhaps on reflection, I would have liked, say 80% new oak instead of 100%, but why let figures get in the way of this Saint Émilion that should be enjoyed over the next decade.

The Wine Independent

The 2015 Virginie de Valandraud Rouge is medium to deep garnet colored. It shoots out with evolving notes of tobacco leaf, fruitcake, and smoked meats over a core scented with preserved plums and kirsch. The full-bodied palate is rich, packed with spicy black fruit preserves supported by velvety tannins, and finishing with great length.

Lovely, with an open-knit, flattering display of plum sauce and creamed raspberry notes infused with light anise, cocoa and fruitcake hints. Ready to go. Drink now through 2026. 5,417 cases made.
