After the majority of the estate-grown Pinot Noir grapes were rejected in 2019 due to wildfires, the 2020 Pinot Noir marks the return of the Hemel-En-Aarde Valley bottling. Initially opening to aromas similar to that of somewhere between the Willamette Valley and Burgundy, the nose is earthy with a slightly rustic appeal and fresh, red-fruited essence. Medium-bodied and beautifully layered, the mouthfeel is bright and food-friendly with succulent acidity and youthful tannins. The wine concludes with elements of raspberry skin, Bing cherry and red spiced tea. ... More details

This shows a lovely fruitiness from the start, with enticing aromas of snappy red cherry and raspberry laced with herbal elements of forest leaves and rooibos tea. The medium-weight palate boasts a satiny texture, with a bright seam of acidity that enlivens the red-fruit flavors and refined yet structuring tannins that frame the sip through the medium-length close. It's enticing now, but will hold well through 2028.

Rated 90 by Wine Spectator
A graceful Pinot framed by light, crisp tannins, and a delicate, herbal overtone accenting flavors of ripe red currant and raspberry fruit, Mandarin orange peel and anise. Bright and lingering on the minerally finish. Drink now through 2026. 500 cases imported.
Winery
A modern, well-crafted version, showing good harmony overall and a seductive palate, exhibiting dark cherry flavors and hints of clove and vanilla, while mineral and floral accents take the back seat. Solid finish.

Varietal: Pinot Noir

Whilst the Pinot Noir grape varietal has its origins in France, and is most closely associated with fine Burgundy wines, it is now grown in almost every wine producing country in the world. There are many reasons for this – the densely packed, deep black bunches of fruits are responsible for making a wide variety of excellent wines, generally agreed to be amongst the most drinkable and accessible one can find. With flavors ranging from currants and red and black berries, to more earthy, spicy notes, Pinot Noir is a versatile varietal which is revered for its relatively light body and beautifully vivid red color However, the grapes themselves are notoriously susceptible to various diseases, and struggle in fluctuating climates. This has not stopped wineries planting and cultivating these vines, though, as Pinot Noir, when grown carefully and treated properly, is a grape with a wide and increasing fan-base, and more often than not produces wonderful wines.

Country: South Africa

Perhaps the most famous and well respected of all the wine regions in South Africa is that of Constantia, which holds many of the oldest and most traditional wineries in the country. Here, the temperate climate receives the Atlantic winds which cool the vineyards, and the fertile soil allows the grapes to grow to full ripeness, resulting in highly flavorful wines which are enjoyed around the world. Whilst Sauvignon Blanc varietals make up the most widely exported wines of this region, the rest of the country produces a huge and impressive range of wines, made up from varietals native to many different European countries. From excellent Champagne style sparkling wines, to aromatic fortified examples, fruity reds and refreshing whites, South Africa continues to impress and surprise, with modern techniques and technologies leading the way and producing exceptional results.
