Distilled from Japanese white rice, this vodka displays subtle violet, almond and charcoal notes on the nose and palate. It finishes light and brisk on a pink peppercorn tingle.
Winery
Available exclusively in the US, Haku Japanese Vodka takes its name from the Japanese word for ‘white’ – haku. The word ‘haku’ itself is rooted in the word ‘hakumai’, which translates as ‘Japanese white rice’. The vodka’s production begins in Kagoshima, Kyushu, where white rice is fermented with koji rice to create a mash. The mash is then distilled through pot stills to create a rice spirit. The liquid then undergoes a second distillation through a pot still and a column still, before it is blended and filtered through bamboo charcoal in Osaka, Japan. It’s a process that Beam Suntory says is unique to the brand and delivers “delicately sweet and subtle flavours”.

Country: Japan

All over Japan, farmers and wine producers take the production of alcoholic beverages including plum wine and sake very seriously. It is an industry which dates back well over a thousand years, and is held in high esteem in this far east country, where plum wines and sake often accompany meals and are used for ceremonial purposes. Whilst plum wine is produced in a relatively similar way to grape based wines, sake requires a complex process more akin to the brewing of beer, except using a rice mash instead of other grains. The rising popularity of both of these drinks in the west has seen the drinks industry in Japan increase dramatically over recent years, and both quality and quantity has risen alongside demand, and is expected to rise further.
